TRADE FAIR

This year’s edition of the Maritime Industry Trade Fair took place in the Evenementenhal in Gorinchem from 29 through 31 May. Visitors had the chance to see the latest maritime developments, while taking advantage of the opportunity of acquiring new contacts and exchanging experiences.

The emphasis each year is on the inland navigation (the Netherlands has the largest fleet of inland navigation vessels in Europe) and this includes fisheries. As always, the Maritime Industry show was full of companies representing shipbuilding, repairs, machine building, installation engineering, propulsion systems, electro-technical installations, communications, navigation, ship components, interior construction and service provision.

HYBRID AND ELECTRIC

Wärtsilä profiled itself at the show as the ultimate partner for inland navigation. After all, we know everything there is to know about the new emission standards for inland navigation from 2020. That means we can offer clients sound advice about their options. we can also showcase what Wärtsilä can do for them; not only with LNG dual-fuel, but also with 100% electric or hybrid solutions.

Wärtsilä is actively involved in the development and construction of emission-free electrical propulsion for ships. “And that's going faster than many people think”, says Director of Inland Navigation, Bram Kruyt of Wärtsilä Netherlands.

“There are already routes that can be fully electrically navigated. De Gouwenaar 2 and the planned Port Liners prove that there is interest in taking this step. The routes they navigate and want to navigate are suitable for travelling electrically on battery containers. On a fixed route, battery containers can be exchanged or charged at the terminals. The technology is proven and technically feasible. We are presently working out the business case with a number of parties.”

EMISSIONS CONTROL WORKSHOP 14 SEPTEMBER

Trade fair visitors were invited to register for the Wärtsilä ‘Emissions of an inland vessel in 2020’ workshop on 14 September 2018, at the Wärtsilä location in Rotterdam harbour, with workplaces and quay in Schiedam. This workshop covers all the information about the most recent regulations in Phase V: which solutions are available and where can Wärtsilä contribute?

Registration for this workshop is still open; to register, get in touch with Johan Penninga at johan.penninga@wartsila.com or 088 960 2000.
